The bridge across Nattai Creek on Colo Street in Mittagong is being reconstructed and widened.

The project will include demolition of the existing bridge followed by construction of a new wider bridge and road pavements plus a new concrete footpath on the southern side, which will be a welcome improvement for the many pedestrians who use Colo Street.

Construction of the bridge will require a complete closure of Colo Street at the worksite from 18 September 2016 to February 2017.

Detour signage will be erected to direct motorists around the worksite as follows:

  • North side via Southey Street, Bong Bong Road and Ferguson Crescent
  • South Side via Southey Street, Webb Street and Range Road

Emergency services and transport providers have been notified of the closure and the wider community will be notified with advertising and variable message boards. Berrima Buslines will advise passengers if changed bus routes are required.

While we regret the unavoidable inconvenience to motorists and pedestrians caused by the temporary road closure, there will be significant improvements for residents, businesses and students once the project is complete.

Lots of work has been completed on the Colo Street bridge site as the weather continues to hold.

Abutments and headstocks have been cast – ready for planks and the bridge deck next!

The team is quietly confident that the work could be completed prior to Christmas IF the weather remains kind. We've got our fingers crossed.

  • Road closed - work underway

Fences are up, the road is closed, detours are in place and work has commenced on site.

Berrima Buslines has adjusted their routes to accommodate the detours and are operating with a mini bus. For more information about their timetables and service please call 02 4871 3211.

We remind residents that the worksite should not be accessed at any time.

Council has been working with contractors to identify a way for pedestrians to travel through Colo Street during the bridge and road resurfacing project.

Unfortunately the size of the construction zone, width of the creek and close proximity of private properties, escalates the cost of a temporary pedestrian bridge and path. This is mainly due to the additional risk that would be taken on by the contractor. It would be very difficult and costly to provide a safe and secure path through the works while machinery is operating as well as after hours when no-one is at the site.

We understand that some residents do not have a car, are ineligible for bus passes or walk into Mittagong for various reasons. To assist those residents Council has organised bus travel vouchers and identified ways for school students to obtain bus passes.

Read more about this in a letter issued 9 September 2016.
