How do I make a submission?

We have provided a survey and other opportunities for you to tell us your thoughts on community safety and crime prevention but you can also email ideas and feedback to Nicole Williams, Community Development Coordinator, wscmail@wsc.nsw.gov.au or call her on (02) 4868 0888.

Will there be any further consultation?

The survey and feedback received during February and March 2014 will be used to develop a new Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan. Once this document has been drafted, the community will be invited to read through and provide comment during the exhibition period.

Some testing of concepts and ideas will occur before the plan is finalised.

If you'd like to advised when the plan goes on exhibition or be involved in testing please email Nicole Williams, Community Development Coordinator, wscmail@wsc.nsw.gov.au or call (02) 4868 0888.

What is the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan?

The Executive Summary of the Wingecarribee Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan 2011-2014 provides a good description as shown below.

Relatively speaking, Wingecarribee Shire is rated as a safe place to live, work and visit. This analysis is supported statistically through the Shire Crime Profile which describes the Wingecarribee Shire as a safe community in comparison to reported crime data characterising the Illawarra region and the New South Wales.

Like any community, there are certain categories of crime which the community have identified as problems and which they would like more attention paid.

It is becoming widely recognised that Community Safety and crime reduction are issues for the whole community. This view is shared by Council and the Local Police Area Command.

Overseeing the implementation of the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan is the Wingecarribee Community Safety Committee. The Committee is made up of local politicians, Wingecarribee Shire Council Councillors and staff, Bowral Police and the Goulburn Local Area Command, Business and Community representatives and transport providers.

The Committee has three objectives. These are to identify Community Safety issues and develop and prioritise strategies to combat these issues; integrate the concept of Community Safety throughout the member organisations and the Shire; and, monitor and review the implementation of the Wingecarribee Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan. The Committee will seek the support of a range of partners and community representatives to participate in further strategy development and actions as the implementation of the Community Safety and Crime Prevention Plan progresses. This will provide a community-wide perspective and continue to make the Shire a safe place to live.

Outlined in the Plan is a range of information that describes what initiates criminal activity and behaviour. Key demographics are provided to present a snapshot of the area's social and economic characteristics. The Plan also includes the results from the community survey carried out to gain an understanding of what members of the community believed was in their eyes activities which reduced their perception of feeling safe in their community and the types of crimes which needed attention.

The plan consists of two main parts including:

Part 1 - Community Safety Policy

    • Commitment to Community Safety

    • Description of the Wingecarribee Shire

    • Planning Dimensions and Considerations

    • Crime Profile of the Shire

    • Community consultation and survey results

    • Analysis

Part 2 - Community Safety Action Plan

    • Selection of appropriate strategies for the Wingecarribee Shire

    • Identification of priority issues
