Green Waste Survey

This consultation has concluded.

Wingecarribee Shire Council is seeking feedback from the community about organic garden waste collection options with an estimated charge of around $78 per annum, or $1.50 per week.

Now that we have locked in a very competitive contract for domestic waste services from July 2014, we can be more accurate in estimating the likely cost of introducing a green waste service for inclusion in the domestic waste management charge.

4000 randomly selected ratepayers were invited in March 2012 to provide their opinions and assist us in determining how green waste services were provided. The response to this survey was pleasing however the results were not conclusive.

Have your say. We need you to be involved in this important community decision and encourage you to:

  • Read the information kit and FAQS
  • Consider which option would suit your situation
  • Add your comments to the forum below
  • Use the Q&A tab below to ask a question
  • Complete an online survey by Friday 23 August 2013.
  • Tell friends, colleagues and family about the opportunity to comment

The options being explored by Council are discussed in an Information Kit especially prepared to explain current services, report how green waste is managed, answer frequently asked questions and explore the pros, cons and costs associated with each option. You can download an electronic version of the information kit from the LIBRARY.

Council assures complete confidentiality with regard to personal information and survey responses will remain anonymous. If you have any questions about the survey or waste collection services please call (02) 4868 0888 or email wscmail@wsc.nsw.gov.au.

Why should the green waste bin charge be compulsory & how cost effective will it be for the contractor to stop to collect from empty bins put out in protest against a service some people don't want?

Rj-m asked over 10 years ago
Hi Rj-m, The domestic garbage charge is compulsory and under section 496 of the Local Government Act 1993, it states council must make and levy an annual charge for the provision of a domestic waste management service for each parcel of land for which the service is available. An opt in service would be very costly as there may be a need for the collection trucks to travel the same distance to collect less bins, and a compulsory service for all residences with a domestic waste service is the most cost effective way to provide this. The major cost for the contractor is the equipment and personnel who provide the service, and in the processing once dropped off. The actual bin lift is only minor and factored in to the cost, so whether the bin is full, half full or presented empty, will not impact the cost.

Hello, will the proposed green waste bin charge (~$78) be annually indexed, or remain consistent throughout the term of the waste contract?

Adam asked over 10 years ago
All of our charges are assessed annually. It is probable that the green waste bin would be annually indexed.
