Have your say about the landscape plan proposed for Moss Vale Cemetery!

Dedicated as a cemetery in 1897, the Moss Vale Cemetery on Berrima Road is defined by a row of pine trees and a scenic rural landscape. Only 548 names are recorded for the cemetery since the first burial in 1909 and Council is exploring ways to make the large burial area more attractive to mourning residents across the Shire.

A draft Landscape Master Plan has been prepared in consultation with funeral directors and other stakeholders to revitalise Moss Vale Cemetery. The plan aims to strengthen the cemetery’s sense of place and utilise its inherent natural features and views, thereby promoting desirability of the facility, as well as being an inviting place for people to mourn and reflect, well into the future.

The cemetery landscape design is intended to meet the specific needs of Wingecarribee’s diverse population, providing each community group with the dignity and the services that best meet their cultural, family and religious requirements.

Take a look and let us know what you think.

I have three distant relatives buried at the Moss Vale Cemetery One is marked and two are not, they are all of the same family Mother and two sons. What happens to unmarked graves in your plans.

Yvonne Chapman asked over 8 years ago

    Hi Yvonne,

All known graves, both those marked with a memorial and those that remain unmarked on the ground, have been taken into consideration in the development of the landscape plan. All existing graves will be left undisturbed.

If you'd like to discuss further and check about that specific family please contact our Cemetery Administration Officer, Karen Allison, on (02) 4868 0887 or email karen.allison@wsc.nsw.gov.au

I have viewed the draft Master Plan for Moss Vale Cemetery. My question is, Will any of the graves in the old Anglican section be moved? The graves in question do not seem to be in straight rows & scattered

Lifetime resident asked over 8 years ago

None of the existing graves in any section will be moved. The existing sites are shown in black on the landscape plan and careful consideration of the overall design has incorporated these areas into the new plan.

Hope that answers your question. For further information please contact our Cemetery Administration Officer, Karen Allison, on (02) 4868 0887 or email karen.allison@wsc.nsw.gov.au

Having just completed seven family grave memorials around the world, compliments to the designer of this proposed plan for Moss Vale Cemetery. I have a few comments, which may have already been addressed but not visible on the plan. To make the site user friendly, a site plan at various locations throughout the cemetery making it easier for visitors to find memorials, not just at the entrance. Section and row plaques with lettering and numbers in each and every section. Water Taps (Could be collected from water tanks off a building roof) and bins needed at various locations throughout the cemetery to make it easier to place flowers and discard dead ones in a recycled compost bin (in keeping with the councils value of recycling). Beach seats at various locations throughout the Cemetery that could be donated or signed with memorial plaques. Thank you for asking. Cheers, Lyn

Concerned asked over 8 years ago

Thank you for your positive feedback and suggestions Lyn. Council will certainly look at clearly marking the different sections and rows within the cemetery to help family and friends in locating the resting place of their loved ones.

Bins and seats, although not marked on the landscape plan will be installed in appropriate locations along with taps. Water tanks to collect rainwater will be considered in the detailed planning for the shelter and future chapel areas.

It seems that the cemetery will cater for those from the area being buried only. What about those of us who want to be cremated? Will there be a place for our ashes to be scattered - with or without a name plaque. When I go, I would love to have a tree planted somewhere (maybe on the boundary of the cemetery). Has council considered this as a means to "no cost to them" greening of the cemetery perimeter?

Vincent asked over 8 years ago

    Hi Vincent,

The proposed landscape plan shows two main areas for the memorialisation of cremated remains, the first is the area around the Water Feature/Pond which is fairly large and will cater for a number of different options including scattered ashes. The second proposed area is the large memorialisation gardens towards the top of the plan above the chapel area. Although this area is proposed as a future extension, this area will provide a formal garden style area for the disposition of cremated remains.

Tree memorialisation has been encouraged in all cemeteries and widely utilised in the Wingecarribee Cemeteries along with donated bench seats. Moss Vale Cemetery currently has a number of trees along the existing driveway for the placement of ashes as well as an existing ash beam area.

For the purposes of providing consistent species and maturity in the tree plantings around the perimeter these areas will be undertaken by Council, however, there will be options within the proposed tree plantings within the cemetery for the placement or scattering of cremated remains with or without a memorial plaque.

Hope that answers your questions. For further information please contact our Cemetery Administration Officer, Karen Allison, on (02) 4868 0887 or email karen.allison@wsc.nsw.gov.au

It is noted in the Intrduction, that this planning proposal consulted with Funeral Directors and other stakeholders. This information would normally be noted in the body of the report but appears to be missing. Could you please advise who the Funeral Directors and other stakeholders are?

Zoot asked over 8 years ago

Thanks for your question Zoot. The document currently on exhibition is a draft strategic landscape plan and not a 'planning proposal'. Representatives from the three funeral directors in this shire were in attendance along with staff from Council’s Asset, Operations, Maintenance and Business services for the design briefing. Crown lands were also notified and given the opportunity for input to the initial design.

Hope that answers your question. For further information please contact our Cemetery Administration Officer, Karen Allison, on (02) 4868 0887 or email karen.allison@wsc.nsw.gov.au
