Willow Vale Bridge

This project has concluded

The timber bridge over the old railway line at Willow Vale has reached the end of its serviceable life and needs to be replaced. Council is taking advantage of this work to upgrade access to the Old Hume Highway.

Council has been lobbying for bridge replacement and access improvements in Willow Vale for some time now and we are very pleased to have construction scheduled for 2016.

A new bridge was recently constructed by John Holland Rail, on behalf of Transport for NSW, to the side of the existing timber bridge.

Upon completion of the bridge Council will be re-aligning Railway Terrace and installing traffic signals (pending final approval of the RMS to detailed design) to form a 4-way intersection with Crimea Street and the Old Hume Highway. This work will provide intersection safety improvements.

The signals will cater for pedestrian crossings and paths will be provided on the bridge, connecting it to the Willow Vale - Mittagong shared path and Renwick Drive signals.

Funding for the bridge work has been provided by Transport for NSW and is being administered by John Holland Rail. The roadworks, including traffic signals, shared paths, foot paths and bus bays are being designed, constructed and funded by Council.

The traffic lights were commissioned on Monday and the whole intersection is now functioning, providing safe access to and from Willow Vale as well as the newly linked Crimea Street in Balaclava.

The project team would like to thank all residents for their patience while the work was completed. We know that driving down to Braemar Avenue caused you inconvenience but we hope that the short term annoyance will be worth it now with improved safety for all.

We’d also especially like to acknowledge and thank the nearby neighbours who rarely complained despite being affected by regular traffic control plus noise and bright lights at all sorts of unsocial hours.

Take care and stay in touch!

Following the Christmas break works are now resuming on this project.

As part of the remaining works, Council’s nominated contractor will be undertaking night works from January 10 to January 12 to complete the asphalting on the Old Hume Highway. These works will happen between the hours of 6pm and 5am, and are in addition to day works.

Traffic flow will be maintained throughout the operation by traffic controllers. As with the night works previously conducted by John Holland Rail, there will heavy machinery, truck movements, some generators and bright lights on site which may affect nearby residents. We apologise for this unavoidable aspect of the works.

Works to follow these night works will be signage installation, commissioning of the traffic signals, line marking, and landscaping.

Should you have any queries or concerns you would like addressed, please contact Tim Wadling on (02) 4868 0825 or by email at tim.wadling@wsc.nsw.gov.au

As the weather continues to hold lots of work has been completed on the Willow Vale bridge site including re-alignment with Crimea Street, stormwater drainage and northbound bus bay.

Up next will be night asphalt work undertaken on the Old Hume Highway on 28 and 29 November 2016. This will be done between 7pm and 5am across those two nights. As with the evening works previously conducted by John Holland Rail, there will need to be heavy machinery, generators and bright lights on site which may affect nearby residents. We apologise for this unavoidable aspect of the works.

Traffic flow will be maintained at all times on the Old Hume Highway with traffic controllers present to guide motorists.

Signage installation, commissioning of the traffic signals, line marking and landscaping are the remaining tasks to be undertaken.

The project team is confident that the work will remain on schedule and be completed mid December if the weather remains kind.

On Monday May 9 there will be some significant works happening at the bridge site which will result in temporarily changed traffic conditions. On the highway one northbound lane will be closed for most of the day whilst several concrete bridge arches are lifted into place. At the same time traffic on Railway Terrace will need to stop intermittently whilst the powerlines are dropped across the railway and Railway Terrace for this work to occur.

The powerlines will be reinstated on Wednesday May 11 and this will result in the need to intermittently stop traffic again whilst this work occurs.
